Wind
Day 16
Today, the route heads northeast through the Beaverhead Valley. On the west is the Pioneer Mt Range, and on the east is the Ruby Range, and the Tobacco Root Mountains. There was a strong tailwind on this segment, much enjoyed. The surrounding valley was all ranch land. The Route turns 90 degrees from Northwest to southeast in the town of Twin Bridges (I don't see no bridges). Directly into the wind. The next town down the road is Sheridan. I stopped here for a snack, and to momentarily get out of the wind. The establishment was a car racing team with lots of trophies lining the walls. There wasn't anyone around (July 5)
You pass Lauren, which has the oldest Catholic Church in the region established in 1801. Next is the town of Alder. Its down in a valley along the Ruby River. A short respite from the wind. The road heads north and climbs from here to the top of the pass. Along the way you pass through Nevada City and Virginia City.
You may recall I had mentioned Bannack, and ghost town formerly the capital of Montana. Bannack gave up the capitol to Virginia City. Henry Plummer was the Sheriff of both Bannack and Virginia City. His deputies and others were referred to as "Road Agents" basically a gang of thieves who preyed on travelers and others. Henry and his gang were hanged by vigilantes in 1864.
Today Virginia City is a National Historical Landmark.
After a fairly steep and hot climb, there was long fast downhill into the Madison River Valley and Ennis, where we spent the night.
I love that area. I’ve fished the Ruby, Madison and Big Hole. Went to church in Lauren, stayed nearby at the Ruby Springs Lodge. Sorry about the wind, hope the temps are better. You’re doing great, and thanks for all the details.
